Scrooge gives money to support local charities

The Bradley School of Dance who performed the musical Scrooge in Great Ayton before Christmas gathered again in the Parochial Hall on Saturday 17th January to present cheques to Zoe's Place Baby Hospice and local Scouts from the proceeds of their very successful shows.

Mr Derrick Previll of Zoe's Place Baby Hospice was presented with a generous cheque, pictured above, for £500 by the Cratchit family to help the hospice in their work with other Tiny Tims of the area.

The hospice, based in Normanby, specialises in giving support to families with terminally ill children from birth to five years old and is a lifeline for those who need it, as it provides respite care in addition to care for the dying. Each of the six cots requires £300 a day to keep running, and all of this comes from voluntary giving.

A further cheque for £200 was also given to Mr Ian McWilliams of the Great Ayton Scout Group, pictured below, to support them in all they do for youngsters in Great Ayton.

The Scouts, who are very active in the village running Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and depend on volunteers and contributions to keep going. This cheque was presented by members of the cast.

Mrs Margaret Connelly, Principal of the dancing school said, "All the children thoroughly enjoyed putting on the show to four full houses before Christmas. It is good to be able to share the pleasure we had doing it by donating some of the proceeds to these very worthy causes."

The musical is based on Charles Dickens famous story, A Christmas Carol, where the mean, tight fisted Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes a dramatic change of heart following the visits of the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future who show him the folly of his ways. The part of Ebenezer Scrooge in the show was played by local Vicar, Paul Peverell, who isn't on this picture as he was the one taking it!

Paul says, "Taking the part of Scrooge with the Bradley School of Dance was a huge pleasure and privilege, and to see it help local causes as well as all the joy it brought to those who came to see it, is the icing on the cake. Well done to Margaret and her dancers who gave us all a taste of Christmas Spirit."
