Great Ayton school has been holding a novel Russian Christmas Concert

GREAT AYTON'S Marwood C of E Infant School has been holding a novel Russian Christmas Concert this year.

The performance is about a little girl called Baboushka who cleans her little Russian house all day long to stop herself from noticing how lonely and sad she is.

A total of 56 pupils aged four to seven were taking part yesterday and today, at 6pm.

The older Year 2 children were being the narrators and musicians while the younger children in Year 1 and the reception class were in costume acting out the story.

The traditional tale relates that Baboushka is so busy sweeping away spiders, mice and flies she fails to notice a new star shining in the sky, an angel hovering in her garden and three mysterious kings.

In a dream, an angel sings to Baboushka of a baby boy born in a manger.

Horrified to think of this baby shivering in a dirty stable, she sets off with a basket full of presents.

By the time she reaches Bethlehem, she has learned a valuable lesson, as well as filling an empty place in her heart.

Headteacher Celia Wilson said: "The children are really looking forward to performing for their families, friends and residents."?

Collections at the performances were in aid of charity of Shelter.

I remember about 15 years ago my daughters school did "Christmas from around the world". Each class doing a Christmas story from a different country. Some really beautiful stories. Baboushka was one of those beautiful stories, I cried watching, and neverforgot it. This story brought memories back.

We saw it yesterday and it was brilliant! All the children (including our grandson) were really good, the leading lady was marvelous.

I was lucky enough to see this nativity twice! It was brilliant. The children performed with such confidence and enjoyment. It really did fill me with the Christmas spirit.
