The River Leven Group was given the £10,000 by Awards for All, the Lottery grants arm for local groups. It has been planning improvements to the riverside area in Stokesley for three years.
Members want to improve the flow of the river through the town with alterations to the weirs, repairing the river walls, diverting dirty outflow water and improving the artificial banks by sloping them.
They also want to re-lay the footpath and erect a pram and disability vehicle-friendly pedestrian bridge at the west end.
Members also want to control some of the invasive plants and encourage natural growth along the banks.
A spokesman for the organisers said: “This money first has to be applied to a hydrological survey to make sure that none of the improvements create any extra risk of flooding.
“The Environment Agency has to be assured by experts about this risk.
“There are also funds for informative notice boards which may be designed with the help of local schoolchildren.
“Topics so far proposed for them are flora and fauna, history of the river in Stokesley, the successful flood avoidance by-pass scheme and a plea not to over-feed the ducks!
The group consists of representatives of local interest groups and is encouraging more locals to step forward to help with projects to enhance the Stokesley riverside.
