HAVE A GO AT VAULTING ON HORSEBACK!

The Riding for the Disabled Association's Unicorn Centre in Hemlington near Middlesbrough, is hosting an Equestrian Vaulting weekend to promote the sport amongst local riders.

Equestrian Vaulting can be defined as gymnastics on the back of a moving horse, and is suitable for able bodied and disabled riders. The horse works in canter controlled by a lunger standing in the centre of a 15-metre circle.

RDA group Equibuddy from Lauderdale, Berwickshire, will be demonstrating this fascinating sport on Saturday 11 October from 7pm to 9pm. Tickets include refreshments and are £5 each, £3 for concessions with a family ticket available at £13.

On Sunday 12 October, there will be a "Have a Go Day" for riders from 10.00am and for instructors from 2pm. This will give riders a chance to try vaulting for themselves or learn the basics of vaulting instruction.

Equibuddy will be bringing a team of specially trained horses, coaches and vaulters to the Unicorn Centre and the demonstration will be led by Jenny Leggate, BHSI RDASI level 3 vaulting coach, who has 35 years experience training equine professionals, working on a voluntary basis with Riding for the Disabled Association, at all levels from helper to Senior National Instructor and Examiner.

Jenny said "Not being responsible for the control of the horse gives the rider a chance to assimilate what's happening underneath them, relax and listen to the rhythm. In Britain, we're too quick to let beginners try and take control of the horse before they are truly comfortable in the saddle, and the result is often damaging for their confidence and their riding skills. They learn to grip against the movement and fight the horse's rhythm."

Centre Manager Claire Pitt said, "We are delighted to be able to host this special weekend. Jenny Leggate is an inspirational coach, and we hope that the demonstration and Have a Go sessions encourage people to take up vaulting. We are hoping to start vaulting at the Centre soon, and I'm sure it's going to be a great success."
