PEOPLE in Middlesbrough are being offered the chance to get up-to-date crime figures at their fingertips.
The move is a bid to keep residents informed about progress being made in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, as well as providing communities with information about what they can do to help make their neighbourhoods safer.
Messages will be generated fortnightly and distributed to residents who have signed up to Middlesbrough Council neighbourhood safety team's Communi-K system.
Last year Middlesbrough became one of the first local authorities in the country to use the web-based technology.
The updates are based on figures from Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Middlesbrough Street Wardens and other agencies, which are collated and analysed by Safer Middlesbrough Partnership.
Middlesbrough Council executive member for community safety and leisure, Councillor Barry Coppinger said: "Communi-K takes neighbourhood watch a stage further and revolutionises the way we tackle community safety in Middlesbrough.
"The potential for the system is enormous and we hope it will help further reduce crime and fear of crime in the future."
Neighbourhood support officer Sarah Harris said: "Anyone who signs up to the scheme receives free messages directly to their telephone, email or mobile phone at a time convenient to themselves."
Anyone who wants to sign up to Communi-K can apply online at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk or on the official website, www.safercommunitiesmiddlesbrough.org. Alternatively contact the neighbourhood safety team on 01642 728409.
