A MECHANIC punched a taxi driver leaving him needing hospital treatment after feuds between their two families.
Sageer Ahmed, 29, of Cranberry, Coulby Newham, left Tahir Mahmood with bruising and facial injuries following the assault in the early hours of November 6 last year.
Teesside Crown Court heard yesterdayfri how Mr Mahmood was in his taxi on Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, when Ahmed pulled up alongside him, before saying: “I want a word with you, will you pull into Albert Terrace?
The two met round the corner where Ahmed got out of his vehicle and approached Mr Mahmood, who was 36 at the time. The court was told Mr Mahmood struck first while still sitting in his car seat, but then Ahmed, an ex-boxer pummeled him with 10-15 punches.
The victim was taken to James Cook University Hospital for treatment.
Harvey Murray, defending, said: “He has never backed away from the suggestion that it was he who instigated the incident. There is some history between the two families.
“The defendant regrets imposing himself on the complainant. He regrets that he lost his temper and he is sorry he did what he did.
“He is a boxer and unfortunately that seems to be why the injuries to Mr Mahmood have been caused as they have, said Mr Murray
Mr Murray added that the feud seemed to be between the women of the two families and not the men.
The judge, Recorder Colin Burn, said: “Whether or not Mr Mahmood did strike out at you first matters little to me because he was sitting in his taxi and you were standing outside it. It couldn’t conceivably be regarded as a fair fight.
“For a boxer you showed a remarkable lack of self control.
Recorder Burn sentenced Ahmed to a 12 month community order with 200 hours unpaid work after he pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm. He also ordered him to pay Mr Mahmood £500 compensation for his injuries.
