In reply to the article in the Gazette's blog page last Tuesday asking for advice about frogspawn and caring for tadpoles, tadpoles will usually find food in the pond or lake where the frogspawn was laid.
It is found in the form of daphnina and other insect larva that is is in ponds.
People are not supposed to move frogspawn from one pond or lake to another as this may cause cross contamination.
As for Dave the Fish, who was found dead on the lawn, he could have simply jumped and landed out of the pond or it could have been a cat.
However, if it was a cat the fish would have had scratches down one or both sides of its body.
The other option is the dreaded Heron which is getting busy at this time of year.
If it was a Heron the fish would have had a hole where the Heron had spiked him.
Hope this answers your questions and helps others.

The comment about the Heron, sometime they can take fish from your pond without putting a hole in the fish, if you do find one of yoyr fish on the ground, yes they could jump out of the pond, and the reason they jump is because the are trying to catch flies and unfortunatly end up outside of the pond, but a Heron my leave the fish that is has cought if it is disturbed. One good way to deture a Heron is to erect a two foot fence around your pond, Herons like to land close to the pond first then walk to the waters edge, if there is a small fence then the fish are protected.
