A half-good game sees team win cup clash

AFTER a weather-enforced two week break, Nunthorpe Under-11 A, pictured below, signed off the year by booking their place in the quarter finals of the North Riding County Cup.

Hosts, Nunthorpe, overcame a tenacious Thirsk Falcons side, to eventually run out comfortable winners, in a game literally of two halves.

It was Thirsk who had the better of the first half, confining a much-changed home side to only a handful of chances.

And, but for some smart keeping from Matty Taylor in the home goal, the visitors could have taken a commanding lead.

Nunthorpe's best effort came from Aaron Pinchbeck midway through the half when his shot from the edge of the area took a deflection off a Thirsk player and sailed just over the bar.

The first half continued with Thirsk asking questions of their hosts but without capitalising.

Thirsk thought they had taken the lead early in the second half only to see their effort ruled out for offside.

This scare prompted a major reshuffle by the Nunthorpe management, bringing on several rested players, which was to change the outcome of the game, and soon afterwards Nunthorpe took the lead.

Latching onto a glorious through ball by Pinchbeck, Dominic Joynes slipped the ball past the advancing keeper into the net.

The opener was to be followed soon after when a corner won on the right was taken by Tom Sweeney.

Launching the ball into the area with a vicious swerve, it beat everyone to fly over their heads and into the top far corner.

Nunthorpe then began to step up the pressure.

They were rewarded with a third when Macaulay Owen picked up a pass on the edge of the area before turning sharply and hitting a shot into the right-hand side of the net.

A further effort was ruled out for offside and the Thirsk keeper produced some heroic saves before Nunthorpe finally wrapped up the game with a fourth.

Another excellent in-swinging corner by Sweeney nearly resulted in him scoring again, only for a Thirsk player to block it on the line.
As the ball broke loose, Josh Holden was on hand to react quickest to stab home.

The players, management and parents of Nunthorpe Under-11s A thank everyone involved in helping the team - especially Beaumont Accountancy, CB Construction, Norton Hotel and the grandparents of Dominic Joynes and Josh Cooper for sponsorship of training equipment. To all mentioned, the TJFA and the teams of the Under-11 Division One, the club wish you a joyful New Year.
