NUNTHORPE Under-11s A entertained visitors Redcar Town, on a bright, but cold morning in a top-four clash.
Played on a heavy pitch, the match produced a great game of football with both teams going all out for the win.
The first half saw Redcar get out of the blocks the sharpest, applying early pressure on the host side they created the better of the early chances.
As Nunthorpe struggled to get their passing game going, Redcar were to be foiled by resolute defending, with the impressive Danny Wilson marshalling Nunthorpe's back four superbly.
It was against the run of play though that Nunthorpe opened the scoring.
A defence splitting pass through the centre by Josh Cooper was seized upon by Josh Holden, who beating the defence for pace, collected the ball in his stride and ran on to the edge of the area, before unleashing a powerful drive which saw the ball fly into the Redcar net.
Redcar responded and again put the home side under pressure, forcing some fine saves from Matty Taylor in the home goal.
It was a result of this pressure that Redcar equalised when a corner, swung in from the left, was met by the head of Baker.
His looping header goalwards was tipped onto the bar by Taylor only for it to fall into a crowd of players on the line and find it's way into the net.
The second half saw Nunthorpe finally get into their stride and begin to play the attacking passing game they are capable of, and posed a real threat to the visitors.
The home sides possession, like Redcar's in the first half, though was to be unrewarded as it was the turn of the Redcar defence to stand solid against the hosts attacks.
Playing with more belief, Nunthorpe looked a different side to the first half and it was they who looked the more likely to score.
Their lead was to be restored midway through the half when a hopeful ball forward caused a mix-up in the Redcar back line.
Confusion between defender and keeper then allowed Macaulay Owen to pounce and dispose of the last man.
With work still to do, he rounded the keeper to slot home into an empty net from inside the area.
This was not to be the last of the action, however, as Nunthorpe created several more chances - the best of which saw a Dominic Joynes cross into the six yard box fail to be converted by both Owen and Holden.
With the game going into the final minutes, Redcar regrouped for one last onslaught.
But they were unable to find a way through the massed ranks of Nunthorpe players for what would have been a well deserved equaliser as the game ended 2-1.
