Nunthorpe School pupils battle it out for sporting honours

SPORTY kids hopped, skipped and jumped with pride as they represented their schools at a Sports Hall Athletics Championship.

Youngsters from four different secondary schools all enjoyed a fun day out of the classroom at the event.

Nunthorpe, Laurence Jackson, Bydales and Rye Hills Schools competed with pride as they took part in running, throwing and jumping events.

Top school on the day were Laurence Jackson, followed by Rye Hills, while Nunthorpe finished third and Bydales came in fourth.

In a close day of competing, the end results went right to the wire.

But no matter how the kids did, they all enjoyed the day and the chance to get out of the school for the afternoon.

Laurence Jackson pupil, Callum Holliday, was leaping for joy when he came third in the six laps race.

"It's been hard work but it's been class," the 13-year-old said. "I hope it happens again next year."

Laura Beaumont, 12, was also having a great time.

"It's been good and I've really enjoyed doing the events," the Bydales pupil said.

"It's great to have all your friends from school cheering for you when you race.

"And it's more fun being here than at school."

The afternoon ran perfectly with all the pupils on their best behaviour and putting in some great performances.

And Laurence Jackson PE teacher, Mr Thompson, said all of the pupils from his school had a ball at the event. "It's been great and all the kids have enjoyed it," he said.

"It's important that the kids get out of school once in a while and do something different. And all of our boys and girls have put in an excellent all-round effort."

The running of the event was assisted by pupils on the Sports Leaders' course at Bydales School.

Michelle Baillie and Alex Fenton were two of the youngsters working hard to ensure the afternoon had gone to plan.

"It's been good fun," Michelle said.

"It's nice to get the schools together and see the kids having fun and making new friends."

"I think all of the kids have enjoyed themselves," Alex added.

The event at the Redcar Leisure Centre was organised by the Redcar and Cleveland Schools Sports Partnership.

"The kids have all been great," Louise Sherrington from the Sports Partnership, said.

"It was a really good afternoon of competition and it was so close the result actually went down to the relay events."

A select team of the best athletes from the event will now be picked to represent Redcar and Cleveland in a Tees Valley Event.
