Jail for 'ranting' attack on taxi

A DRUNKEN man who terrified three women when he smashed their taxi's window and began ranting has been jailed.

Jonathan James McMullan attacked the cab on Wilson Street, Middlesbrough, as it made its way towards the A66 at 3.30am on November 8, Teesside Crown Court heard. He smashed the window then approached the three women in the back.

Prosecutor Sharon Elves said: "They describe him as 'possessed'. He was angry, bright red and gritting his teeth. He put his head in the taxi and continued shouting and swearing."

Nearby police officers then gave chase and the 24-year-old defendant hid under a car. He refused to get out until a police dog handler arrived on the scene.

McMullen, of Chathill Walk, Ormesby, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and affray. He also admitted that by committing the crimes he was in breach of a suspended sentence order imposed in January 2007.

Andrew Turton, defending, said: "He does have difficulty with regard to alcohol."

Judge Tony Briggs jailed McMullen for 12 months.
