ORMESBY’S Karina Lefevre, 14, created table tennis history at the Butterfly Grand Prix Table Tennis tournament at Liverpool last weekend by becoming the youngest player to win the Women’s Singles title in the Senior event.
Karina, unseeded, beat the 2006 English Grand Prix champion, Lindsey Thornton by 3-1 in the final, having beaten Rachel Baker of Cheshire 3-1 in the semi final and Sarah Perks of Nottingham in the quarter final by 3-2.
In the opening round, Karina’s opponent was the Scottish international Rebecca Russell who she beat 3-1.
Victories over Lindsey Thornton, Sarah Perks and Rebecca Russell were all against players ranked higher than Karina in the national ranking list. This boosts her national senior ranking in addition to clinching the title.
In the Under 21 Girls Championship in Liverpool, Karina reached the final only to be beaten by the Irish international Clare Nelson, 3-1.
Meanwhile more than half of the North-east team in the UK School Games Table Tennis competition in Coventry this week are Teessiders.
They include English Champion Paul Drinkhall, plus Ormesby quartet David Meads, Danny Reed, Karina Lefevre and Chloe Whyte.
Joining Drinkhall, Meads and Reed in the Boys team is Sheffield’s Ben Barlow, and with Lefevre and Whyte in the Girls team are Bradford’s Mary Fuller and Sheffield’s Melissa Wright.
The competition starts with the team events on Friday with the singles being played on Sunday.
