The swimmers took part in a sponsored swim at Tees Valley Leisure's Eston Sports Academy to raise cash for Redcar Lifeboat - and many youngsters set themselves a tough target of covering 2 miles, in 1 hour, pictured above Dave Cavendish and Rob Walpole from Redcar Lifeboat with swimming coach Ann Forrest .

The swim was the idea of Eston chief swimming coach Ann Forrest, who said: "Redcar Lifeboat crew were kind enough to help us after a traumatic family event earlier this year, and this is my way of saying thank you.

The swim was a family affair for the Forrest family as Ann's husband Ian who is also a swimming coach for Eston Swimming Club and their son Andrew also joined in the sponsored swim.

Swimmers aged from five to twenty five plus took part in the event, last night and members of Redcar Lifeboat crew were on the sidelines to help keep track of the number of laps.

Ann said "We really applaud the swimmers achievements - some of the youngsters swam in excess of 114 miles collectively. Some of the 1st squad swam over 2 miles and most of the little ones achieved a mile. One of our 6 year olds managed over 87 lengths which is the equivalent of nearly one and a half miles.

Lifeboat operations manager Dave Cavendish, who helped to count the number of laps, has historical links to Eston Swimming Club - his children swam for the swimming club 20 years ago, pictured below swimmers take the plunge for Redcar Lifeboat.

He said: "It was a fantastic evening and the event was a great success. We really appreciate all the efforts of those who took part to raise money for this worthy cause"

In return for the youngsters efforts, Redcar Lifeboat will be hosting a VIP day for all the swimmers who took part.
