Acklam Under-17s travelled to Pocklington with a depleted back division, having both regular fly-halves missing and lost 31-7. However they made a determined effort with the forwards competing very strongly throughout the game. Dan Burns (No. 7) scored the only try, but there were very good performances from forwards Andy Willoughby and Charlie Smith. Ben Forbes had an excellent game, putting in some fine kicks.
The Under-16s hosted Darlington but went down 34-5.The half time score was 5-5 and Acklam competed strongly but the second half saw an early try and the game changed. Earlier in the season Acklam went down quite heavily at Darlington so this was a much improved performance.
The Under-14s didn't fare much better loosing 24-12 and the first word that came to mind was disappointment as the second half display was simply not good enough. Acklam played into the wind in the first period and did well with Richard Martin opening the scoring with a well deserved try.
There were strong runs from James Wood, Josh Abraham and Martin who all would have scored if it wasn't for the good tackling of the opposition full back. At the break it was 5-7 in favour of the visitors.
Acklam's game lost its shape in the second period and they failed to take advantage of the conditions.
Malton and Norton also saw off the Under-13s 32-19 although Acklam played their best rugby so far this season with a full squad led by Dray Waddington.
The visitors are one of the best teams in Yorkshire in their age group and are in the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Cup. They brought a very large and strong side which worked around their strong forwards although they didn't have it all their own way with the Acklam forwards well up for the challenge, matching and if not beating them on every drive. The first try came from No 8 Lewis Boyce while the second came from Rob Carbine whose play was powerful. Boyce was next over for another while there were two well converted kicks by Oliver Rowe-Phillips. Liam Wyke and Dominic Wigglesworth were both mentioned in despatches.
Although the Under-12s lost this week 22-7 it was a much improved performance against a West Hartlepool team that early in the season had easily beaten the Acklam side.
The only try was scored by Tom Dawson and converted by Bradley Gater. Adam Harrison had an excellent game as did Sam Warrior, Connor Haslock and Alfie Cox. Thomas Foggin playing his first game at full back showed potential.
The Under-11s travelled to West Hartlepool for a tri tourney against hosts and Hartlepool Rovers having only played once before. Rovers won 14-10 and West won 24-7 but they had to work hard. Thomas Fixter scored two tries while Joe Warrior with Pierre Thembo made some great runs.
The newly formed Acklam Under-8s had their first game of tag rugby against Whitby and all the boys and girls from both clubs had a great morning with Acklam going down 15-11. All the Acklam players scored on their debuts; they were Taylor Green, Cameron Flower, Jack Miller, Daniel Scott, Joshua Robinson and Jacob Swann.
New players are very welcome see www.acklamrufc.co.uk for details.
