Sportacus, star of CBeebies programme LazyTown, visited Year 1 to join the youngsters in a half an hour fun fitness class.

And Boro player Rhys Williams spoke to the children to find out what they do to be healthy.

The youngsters impressed the competition judges with their journal of the activities they did and healthy food they ate.

They gave examples of healthy recipes and put together a table of 'sport candy' - which is 'LazyTown speak' for fruit and vegetables.

The children were able to take home a Sportacus doll or Stephanie doll (characters from the programme) to help inspire them to be healthy at home.

Suzanne Stonehouse and her son Ethan, five, an avid LazyTown magazine fan, inspired teacher Emma Bell and the class to enter the competition.

Mrs Stonehouse said: "Ethan loves LazyTown magazine and on the front of it was a request from Sportacus to find Britain's healthiest class.

"I printed the information off from the internet and brought it in to show Mrs Bell who agreed to it.

"We bought a Sportacus and Stephanie doll so the children can play with them.

"They took pictures of their Sports Candy for a five-a-day chart."

She said she was stunned when she found out the class had won.

"I was so excited for them, everyone was. There's been a buzz in school since we found out - there were quite a lot of entries.

"Ethan eats healthily anyway but because Sportacus does it with them it means they do it a lot more. Sportacus is Ethan's hero so if Sportacus eats something he is going to as well."

What do children in Year 1 like about being healthy?

Ethan Stonehouse, five, from Middlesbrough: I like grapes and running.

Tom Dorgan, five, from Middlesbrough: I like to eat apples and I go to gymnastics every Monday.

Tammy Higham, five, from Middlesbrough: I like to eat vegetables and bananas and I like jumping and Irish dancing.

Grace Davies, five, from Linthorpe: Sometimes I eat oranges and I like to run.
