TWO tough Middlesbrough soldiers have helped pull in a haul of trophies at a Tug of War competition.

Lance Bombardiers Kevin Day, 21, and Daniel Lowery, 23, are two of the Army’s strongest members of their Tug of War squad and helped them win a trophy in each weight at the Inter-service Tug of War Championship.
The Boro lads said the old stereotypes of overweight, beer-swilling giants is gone and the Army Tug of War team is more likely to be drinking a Slim Fast shake than a pint of lager.
LBdr Day, a former pupil of Newlands School, worked as a mechanic at CC Motors at Acklam Garage before joining the Army and his parents, John and Linda, live in Acklam.
LBdr Lowery, studied at St David’s RC Secondary School, and worked as a barman before joining the Army in 2003. His parents, Anthony and Christine, live in Middlesbrough.
The anchorman of the team, LBdr Lowery, said: “The general public don’t see it as a sport that’s really popular but in the military it really is a big thing.
“The training and weight-loss are tough – me being such a big lad, I’ve gone from 101 kilos to 90 kilos to make it into the squad.
“You have to really watch your weight for the competition but travelling around with the team and winning the trophies makes it all worthwhile.
The two Middlesbrough men both serve with 40 Regiment, Royal Artillery.
