A DEPRIVED African school is beginning to thrive thanks to the fundraising efforts of pupils from Acklam Grange.
The students are visiting Lesiraa School in Tanzania, which they adopted in 2004. So far the schools has raised about £20,000 to build and furnish four classrooms, provide educational resources and sports equipment, and enable water to be piped into the school.

The school has also raised enough for the building of two more classrooms and its next project will be to erect an educational development centre for the whole community in Lesiraa, in partnership with a South African businessman. The on-going project means Acklam Grange pupils will make the trip every two years.

This time 24 of them, aged 15 to 18, have embarked on the three-week visit, and before they set off they had to raise £17,757 to cover the cost. While there the group will spend time in Kenya, Nairobi and other parts of Tanzania. They will visit the Rift Valley, Serengeti and Masai Mara.
Ruth Delany, 15, of Linthorpe, said: “I’m looking forward to working with the kids. It should be a life changing experience.
