Beverley School for children with autism, which recently secured specialist technology status, invited experts to show pupils how technology helps them.

The army bomb disposal experts from the Royal Logistic Corps showed the youngsters, at the school in Saltersgill, Middlesbrough, the robotic technology they use.

And one youngster was given the chance to carry out an explosion on the football field.

The school was also visited by firefighters who gave a chip pan demonstration and the BBC Tees bus where youngsters learned about how technology is used in broadcasting.

Headteacher Nigel Carden said: “We are looking at how people use technology in the course of their jobs and the bomb disposal experts do a very important job, we were fascinated to see the robots they use to help make suspicious packages safe and they were fabulous with the children.

“Because of our technology status we are looking at more ways to bring technology into school.

Pupils from neighbouring Tollesby School came to watch the controlled explosion.

Mr Carden said: “One of the students was allowed to detonate the explosion while everybody watched. I don’t think the neighbours could have heard it but the army had to tell the police they were in the area and would be deliberately causing an explosion.
