Teenager Daniel Neale contacted Grassroots asking for a shot at the challenge after watching another Newlands team scoop three medals, courtesy of Cleveland and Teesside Trophies.
Daniel speedily arranged for his team and Simon Carey, head of PE at the school, to try their luck.
The Year 11s’ attempt several weeks ago saw Sean Cuff, the first contender to take a shot, strike the bar cleanly - and luck was again on the side of the first taker this week, as teacher Simon Carey’s ball rattled the crossbar.
It was second-time lucky for Mr Carey, whose previous shot, during the Year-11s’ challenge, went wide of the mark.
But the determination on his face was clear to see this week, so Grassroots was only too pleased to give in to his pleas for a second go.
This week he declared himself Daniel’s biggest fan - after all it was Daniel who arranged for him to have another go.
Despite some close shaves, only one other player from the Year 10 challengers hit the crossbar.
Defender Liam Griffiths earned himself a much sought after Gazette Crossbar Challenge medal.
The team also included former pupil Antonio Greco, who had returned to Newlands to take part in a work experience programme in the PE department.
