TWO intrepid hospital staff have received an award for saving the life of one of their colleagues.

Georgina Foster and Zak Waqar-Uddin, both from The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, went to the rescue of Mandy Bruce when she started choking.
Mandy, assistant postgraduate services manager at the hospital, was eating her lunch in the office and started to choke on a piece of meat. She could not breathe but Georgina, postgraduate services administrator from the academic division, and Zak, a senior house officer in intensive care, spotted she was in trouble.
They carried out the Heimlich manoeuvre and thumped her back. Mandy said: “I would not be here today if it was not for Georgina and Zak. I would probably have died.
“Words cannot express how grateful I am and I wanted to nominate them for a special thank you award.
The duo were presented with the award on July 10 by South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust.
Trust chairman Glenys Marriott said: “We give thank you awards to a small number of staff at the trust each year to reward them for work above and beyond the call of their normal duties.
