Op success for Berwick Hills mum and Norton son

A VITAL kidney transplant between a selfless mum and her son has gone well.

Sharon Walker from Middlesbrough returned home from hospital on Sunday after donating one of her kidneys to 22-year-old Craig, pictured above.

Both are recovering well, with doctors hailing the surgery a success.

Craig's partner, Sarah Behan, 22, said: "As far as I know everything has gone all right.

"The doctors said it all went perfectly. Everything was compatible and there were no complications.

"Sharon is doing really well and Craig is not doing too badly - he's in a bit of pain though. I'm so glad that it went well, we all are."

Without the transplant, Craig was told he could wait years on the organ donor list.

But if successful, the operation would give the Norton dad a new lease of life and the ability to play with his children Leon, four, and four-month-old Emily.

swalker.jpgTests showed his mum was a perfect match and, prior to last Thursday's operation, Sharon, 46, pictured, from Berwick Hills, said she didn't think twice about helping her son.

"I want to give Craig the perfect life, to get him back on his feet and get back to work and be able to enjoy time with his children," she said.

The operation was carried out at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.

Craig and Sharon's family spent much of their weekend there, supporting their loved ones after the operation.

Craig's dad, also called Craig, said: "The operation was on Thursday and they have told us it would be about 10 days before Craig was well enough to leave.

"They're taking it one step at a time, but he's looking much better now than he was on Thursday."

The family is urging more people to join the organ register by calling the Organ Donor Line 0845 6060400 or visit
