Dean Pierre, 17, Shahid Hussain, 16, and 18-year-old twins Christopher and Carl Braithwaite, all pictured above, from North Ormesby Youth and Community Centre have all completed their bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Now they have left for their Gold Expedition to Kenya where they will climb Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa.

And when they complete their mission they will be on their way to becoming the first group in Middlesbrough Youth Service for 20 years to have achieved gold, silver and bronze awards.

After their trek to the top of Mount Kenya, Dean, Carl, Chrissy and Shahid, who all live in North Ormesby, will travel to Nairobi where they will help build an extension to a primary school.

Andy Monaghan, Middlesbrough's Duke of Edinburgh Award officer said: "When the group has completed this challenging expedition they will be well on their way to completing their DofE gold award. The gold award is internationally recognised and is a major achievement. The group is very committed and is looking forward to receiving their invitation to Buckingham Palace to accept their awards."

The four expedition members have said they want to thank the Youth Opportunities Fund, North Ormesby Development Trust and Tees Valley Community Foundation for funding towards the cost of the Kenyan trip.
They also want to thank Cleveland Fire Brigade, Middlesbrough Army Cadet Force, Millets, Middlesbrough FC, Steel City Gymnasium, Unison, Safe in Tees Valley and Middlesbrough Youth Service for support and donated gifts.
