Cleveland Juniors Under-12s secure back-to-back wins

CLEVELAND Juniors Under-12s were at home to 21st All Stars on a blustery morning - trying to build on the previous week's excellent performance.

It was Clevo who started the brighter, knocking the ball about swiftly with the wind at their backs.

In a tight first half, chances were few and far between, with keeper Close a virtual spectator.

Clevo stepped it up a gear with central midfielders Bligh and Marsay pulling the strings.

A good move involving Klymaytys down the right then ended with Butler hitting a shot goal-wards only for the keeper to gather it up.

Marsay then went close with a long range strike only for the keeper to knock it round the post with his feet.

All Stars tried to hit back but for the second successive week the back four of Hodgson, Smith, Breslin and Shaw stood firm.

A great move involving Marsay, Bligh then Klymaytys ended with Butler missing the target with his effort.

Pink was having a storming game down the left as he attacked All Stars at every opportunity.

And Reeve then weaved through two or three players and almost put Butler in the clear - but the wind carried it away from him.

There was then a blow for Clevo just before half-time as captain Marsay had to leave the pitch with an ankle injury, before being replaced by Makka.

Makka was straight into the action winning two challenges in central midfield, but the half ended 0-0.

Now up against the wind, Clevo knew they had to keep the ball on the ground and they did just that, knocking it around superbly.

Goodings and Hales entered the fray looking to create openings with their pace as All Stars defended strongly.

A great corner from Butler almost landed on the head of Breslin but it was just out of his reach.

And then a great ball from Pink found Bligh who skipped past two challenges before being brought down by the third, as Clevo won a free-kick from 25-yards out.

Up stepped Pink to curl in a beauty from which Smith rose majestically to power home a great header into the top corner to give Clevo a deserved 1-0 lead.

Close then kept the scores level when bravely diving out at the strikers feet, putting the ball out for a corner.

From the corner, Pink cleared and Hales broke free and accelerated away only for the defender to make a great block.

Then from another Clevo corner the ball broke to Goodings who hit a strike only to cannon back off a defender.

With the last kick of the match, All Stars keeper cleared with the wind behind him and the ball bounced dangerously over the Clevo backline.

Close challenged the striker and the ball bounced over both of them heading goalwards. And only an excellent headed goalline clearance from Breslin prevented it from ending up 1-1.

There wasn't even time for All Stars to take the corner before the whistle went and Clevo secured back to back 1-0 wins.

It was another superb defensive display from Clevo's back five and a great showing from Pink down the left.

But the man of the match award went to Bligh for yet another quality midfield display.

Well played to All Stars who fought until the very end and defended superbly.
