MIDDLESBROUGH Amateur Swimming Club has appointed Steve Cox as their new head coach.

Cox has replaced the outgoing Les Green, who has retired from the sport after 40 years working with swimmers.

The new man was introduced to a fresh crop of budding stars when training resumed at MASC at the beginning of this month.

Steve is a rising star in the eyes of British swimming, and has been part of the coaching staff on two recent trips to Australia, where he worked with the best of Britain's young swimming talent.

It is a return home for Steve and his wife, Donna, who lived in Hartlepool before leaving Teesside seven years ago.

Steve left the area to take up a post at City of Sheffield Swimming Club, having been head coach at Hartlepool Swimming Club from 1994 to 2000. Under his tenure, he guided Christopher Alderton to the club's first national medal in 20 years.

Steve took over the post of assistant head coach at the Sheffield club, where he coached several swimmers to medal positions - including gold - at the National Age Group Championships.

He was also responsible for electronic timing and scoreboard operation at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

In 2006, Steve was a member of the backroom staff on an end-of-year tour for British Swimming's development squads in Singapore and Brisbane. And such was his impact, he was invited back to assist on the 2007 visit to Perth and Brisbane. He also represented ASA North East Region as their head coach on regional camps in 2007 and 2008.

Middlesbrough's new coach also holds a keen passion for open water swimming, having just coached a swimmer from his current club to the European Junior Open Water Championships. He also worked at national training camps in Spain from 2005 to 2007, as well as having experience as head coach of Yorkshire inter-counties team for 2006.

Along with his wealth of experience and numerous achievements in the sport, Steve is also known to have a good rapport with his young swimmers and is able to bring out the best in them.

MASC have welcomed Cox to the club and have stated their hope that he spends many happy and successful years on Teesside.
