We're all set to go

A DOZEN families are hitting the tarmac and urging others to join them as they run the Middlesbrough 10K.

The families from East Middlesbrough are getting fit for free thanks to funding from the STEM partnership (Stronger Together in East Middlesbrough).

The STEM partnership wants to help improve health and fitness among families and decided to fund the group in the third annual 10K race.

Some youngsters and parents who were unable to tackle the full race are going for the 3K Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust Fun Run instead, with both runs starting on Sunday, September 16.

TS3 has provided the application form in the link below (in PDF format) to let readers send off their applications before the deadline date of August 31.

Emma Thomas, Middlesbrough PCT’s community health development lead, said: “The families involved have shown a lot of real dedication. They are being encouraged to overhaul their lifestyles by focusing on healthy living as a life change rather than simply getting fit for the race.

Some family members are joining Boxercise sessions as well as various training schedules and diet advice from the council’s healthy eating officer Suzanne Younger.

Redcar paralympic legend Dame Tanni Grey Thompson is the 10K race patron and the event starts at 10.15am on September 16 from Acklam’s Hall Drive.

The 10K race costs £13 for unaffiliated runners and £11 for those who are affiliated. Prize money of £250 is being offered for first place.

The 3K Fun Run takes place at 9.10am from nearby. It costs £7 for adults and £6 for children under 16.
