EAST Clevelander Andy Conn believes he can ride and map read his way to a personal-best-
equalling performance at this month's European Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships.
The 42-year-old finished 18th in the elite race at last year's global event in Italy.
And after wins in events such as the British Long Distance Championships this season, the Great Britain team captain feels he is well capable of matching it in Lithuania, where he rides four times in as many days from September 24-28.
"The top 20 would be really nice," said the underground geologist, who has returned to his old job at Boulby Potash after spending a two-year stint living in and racing from Vienna.
"The standard is really high - there is only one rider in the world top 30 from outside Europe.
"But in the last couple of years I've been doing it consistently. With a bit of luck I'll produce some reasonable rides and I've got the training behind me."
Conn's build-up has included several races in Eastern Europe. He finished second in the Czech Republic for Czech team Tesla Brno and won the team event.
He also made a guest appearance at the Hungarian National Championships, coming second, and plans to race in next year's World Championships in Israel.
