PLANNING permission has been granted for a £22m, 125-home scheme in Loftus.
As reported, Coast & Country Housing submitted a proposed plan for the Westfield Estate, Loftus, to Redcar and Cleveland Council for outline planning permission.
Planning committee members considered the application for 125 mixed residential properties, plus a primary care trust centre and parking, refurbishment of the estate and alterations to the highway layout.
After hearing residents wanted to keep a 1.5m ancient hedge on the eastern edge of the site as a buffer between North Road and the estate, members decided to hold a site visit.
Residents also had other concerns, including access and fears the scheme is too big.
But now, following the site visit, planning permission has been granted.
Committee chairman, Councillor Brian Hogg, said: "Members do want to retain the hedgerow where possible, but obviously feel the scheme will be a benefit to the community, developing both the estate and the houses."

At last! Now the real work can begin.
Congratulations to all involved in bringing the refurbishment one step closer to reality.
Let's hope the work proceeds without further delay and with the full support of everyone living on or near the estate.
