Police to target drivers in Loftus

A POLICE crackdown is to be mounted in East Cleveland after a significant number of local drivers have flouted seatbelt and mobile phone laws.

Cleveland Police are dismayed that despite a number of widely- publicised and high visibility operations, some motorists are still failing to wear seatbelts and are causing obvious road safety hazards by continuing to use mobile phones on the move.

Over the last 12 months, the Neighbourhood Policing Team based at Loftus Police Station has carried out a series of road safety operations throughout Brotton, Loftus and Lockwood wards.

With education high on the agenda motorists, including motorcyclists, were pulled over and given DVDs, leaflets and other materials on how to use Cleveland's roads safely and legally.

PC Adrian Berryman, of Loftus Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We have focused on education rather than enforcement where possible.

"And it seems the majority of motorists are taking our messages on board.

"However - in the run up to Christmas - local officers will now be enforcing road safety legislation by issuing road users committing offences with appropriate fixed penalty notices.

"In addition to this, all motorists involved in moving vehicle offences will be breath tested."
