Heritage sites open to explore in East Cleveland

SEVERAL East Cleveland attractions are opening up for the first time as part of the Heritage Open Days project.

The four-day annual event celebrating Britain's architecture, history and culture runs from today until Sunday.

And this is the first year that many properties in the area have taken part. East Cleveland highlights include:

  • Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, Skinningrove: Discover the skills and customs that built Cleveland's ironstone heritage.
  • Guisborough Library: What is the connection between Alice in Wonderland, Barbary Coast pirates and the last of the Saltburn Smugglers? Listen to Dr Tony Nicholson from the University of Teesside talk about the secret history of a house in Brotton
  • St Nicholas' Church, Guisborough: Travel back to medieval times with re-enactment group Rosa Mundi and explore the church with a guided tour from local historian Roger Darnton.
  • Margrove Heritage Park: Take a peek into this now closed school and re-live school life in days gone by.
  • Loftus Town Hall: Tour this Victorian town hall and hear about its history, as well as viewing the newly restored First World War memorial.
  • Skelton Heritage Trail: Delve into Skelton's past with a guided tour round the village by a local historian.
The tour includes visits to New All Saints Church

The Heritage Open Days online directory listing all the events in England can be seen at www.heritageopendays.org.
