Nostalgia

Digging through our library archives we found some very interesting photos of Warwick University's student demo's and disputes.

Do you remember being at Warwick University when any of these events took place?

Perhaps you have more pictures to share or can name a few of the students shown in the pictures.

These were taken between 1970 and 2002. Maybe you have a story to tell to go with the pictures. If so we'd like to hear from you so please get in touch by emailing us at communities@coventrytelegraph.net

Hole load of strain on resources

Posted by Esh Capelo on Apr 29, 09 02:53 PM in Nostalgia

POTHOLES in the road are causing a drain on the city's resources.

More than £105 million has been spent on Coventry's roads over the past three years, including £900,000 on potholes alone.

Ruling Tory councillors have blamed the old Labour administration for a massive underinvestment, causing a backlog of repairs. They have also accused Labour of botching negotiations with the Highways Agency for maintenance of the A45.

Tales of Tile Hill

RENE COSTELLOE'S memories of life in Coventry's Tile Hill in the 1940s won her first prize in a competition.

Originally from Scarborough, Rene moved to the city during the war to work at the Standard Motor Company in Tile Hill Lane where she helped to build Bristol Bombers and Mosquitos.

Jon Bywater of Hathaway Road, Tile Hill Village, took the photo showing Tanyard Farm before the estate was built, from a tree in Plants Hill Wood in the early 1970s at the age of 10.

Jon then fell from the tree, but he and his camera both escaped undamaged to tell the tale.

THIS picture shows VE Day celebrations outside the Railway hotel in Warwick Road, Coventry, in May 1945.

It was sent in by retired Coventry doctor William (Bill) Navin - the man third from the left, clutching the bottle.

Dr Navin, aged 95, who lives in the city's Cannon Hill area, said: "People were singing and dancing in the street.

THIS picture of a wartime Coventry football team has been sent to us by former city factory boss Derek Salt.

It is of the GEC (Coventry) second XI who played in the local works league during the Second World War - and included a young man who went on to play professional football for Coventry City FC.

Derek, now aged 84, who lives at Wainbody House, Stoneleigh Road, Gibbett Hill, can be seen third from the left on the back row.
