As a massage therapist, clients often tell me about treatments they've had in far-flung corners of the world. Most sound completely heavenly, like four-handed Pacific massage in a luxurious tree-house spa nestled in one of Thailand's islands.

Usually, hearing about such amazing experiences leaves me feeling unable to deliver on quite the same level, and it can kind of put a downer on the treatment you're doing in a fairly standard room, with no beach in the background, parrots padding about and that sort of thing. (Of course, this sense is amplified when you're crammed into a tiny, scruffy dressing room at some down-at-heel music venue, heavy metal thumping in the background.)

I'll let you in on a secret- I don't believe it's worth having facials, even though I regularly perform them in the spa where I work, part time. Eek!

Although I should be raving about the marvellous, transformative powers of these £50 plus treatments, I actually think they're a waste of money. It's not that having one is completely worthless, just more that you can attain the same results at home. If you look after your skin and use the right products, learning to adapt what you apply depending on what your skin needs that day, there shouldn't be any need for you to make that costly hours' appointment every month.
